CM Sindh Announces Free Electricity to Users of Up to 100 Units
CM Sindh Announces Free Electricity to Users of Up to 100 Units, In a significant move to alleviate energy burdens on the residents of Sindh, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has announced a comprehensive plan to provide free electricity to households consuming up to 100 units monthly and to supply solar power systems to off-grid homes. This initiative aims to improve energy accessibility and promote sustainable energy solutions across the province.
Meeting Overview: Key Decisions and Participants
During a strategic meeting held at the Chief Minister’s House in Karachi, CM Murad Ali Shah deliberated on various proposals with key officials, including Energy Minister Nasir Hussain Shah, Adviser Ahsan Mazari, Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah, Principal Secretary Agha Wasif, and Energy Secretary Musaddiq Khan. The discussions focused on identifying practical solutions to enhance energy distribution and sustainability in Sindh.
Free Electricity for Consumption Households
Energy Minister Nasir Hussain Shah briefed the participants on the current energy consumption statistics:
- Approximately 80,000 households consume around 50 megawatts monthly. This includes:
- 441,483 households under K-Electric
- 229,338 households in HESCO’s jurisdiction
- 125,500 households in SEPCO’s jurisdiction
- Additionally, around 1.9 million households consume approximately 100 megawatts monthly, broken down as follows:
- 1,054,000 households in Karachi (KE)
- 566,427 households in the Hyderabad region (HESCO)
- 356,073 households in the Sukkur region (SEPCO)
CM Murad Ali Shah announced that households consuming up to 100 units of electricity per month would receive their power free of charge. This measure aims to provide significant financial relief to low-income families and ensure their access to essential electricity services.
Solar Power Systems for Off-Grid Households
Recognizing the need to support off-grid communities, the Chief Minister highlighted plans to distribute solar home systems (SHS) to approximately 2.6 million off-grid households. The initial phase will cover 500,000 households, each equipped with a solar home system that includes:
- Three LED bulbs
- A 35-watt DC fan
- Mobile charging ports
- A six-hour battery backup
Each SHS is estimated to cost around 50,000 rupees, offering a sustainable and cost-effective solution for off-grid energy needs.
Pilot Projects and Solar Parks: Pioneering Sustainable Energy
To further support the transition to renewable energy, CM Murad Ali Shah proposed establishing six microgrids, each with a capacity of 75 kilowatts, as pilot projects across six divisions. These micro-grids will serve clusters of 100 households, providing reliable power to homes consuming up to 100 kilowatts.
In addition, the Chief Minister suggested setting up three solar parks, each with a capacity of 305 megawatts, to supply electricity to K-Electric, HESCO, and SEPCO. These solar parks will benefit both on-grid and off-grid households, promoting widespread access to clean energy.
Future Steps: Proposals and Implementation
CM Murad Ali Shah directed Energy Minister Nasir Hussain Shah to prepare detailed proposals for solar parks and solar home systems. These proposals will undergo further discussion and approval to ensure a well-planned and efficient implementation of the initiatives.
CM Murad Ali Shah instructed Energy Minister Nasir Hussain Shah to create comprehensive plans for solar parks and solar home systems. These proposals will be reviewed and approved to guarantee a well-organized and effective implementation of the initiatives.
Conclusion
The Sindh government’s ambitious plans to provide free electricity and solar power systems underscore a commitment to improving energy accessibility and sustainability. These measures are poised to significantly benefit low-income and off-grid households, fostering economic relief and environmental sustainability.
